Packing Tips from Miss Fish

If you are a procrastinator when it comes to packing for a trip….this blog entry is not for you. However, if combining essentials,  and a few luxury items into a nice “light weight” pack is a priority, fear not! It can be done with planning, organizing and of course, money.

#1 Start early -decide the general goal of your trip including environmental concerns. Every item should have more than one use if at all possible.

#2 Practice pack – this is a must. Every time you pack up your gear, missing items pop out and scream…”what about me?” Leave plenty of time to find, repair, borrow, or buy needed items. Keep in mind that some items for travel (i.e. outdoor) must be ordered on-line and may required several weeks to arrive.  Buy ultra-light gear whenever possible.  These items are becoming more affordable and are usually of high quality.

#3 Unpack. This is when your self-discipline comes in handy. A few days before your trip, unpack everything and ask yourself, “will this item be used?” “Do I really need it? *If you hesitate at all, leave it at home*.  You will be amazed at the size and weight of your discard pile! ^_^

#4 Allow yourself one (two at the most) luxury items. I can’t imagine traveling without music and something to read. Therefore, my Kindle and MP3 player are necessary essentials. This means I have to sacrifice something else. Fortunately we don’t mind laundry stops (small clothes bag) and essential toiletries only.

For my trip, a 24 day hiking tour of Ireland, total pack weight including jacket and boots is 28 pounds. Not ultra-light, but a nice combination of practicality and comfort.
