Mr. Someguy Goes to Washington

After a long journey of enlightenment and discovery over the last ten days, Miss Fish and I are loitering in Boston’s South Station, waiting to take the red-eye Northeast Corridor train to Washington, D.C. We are planning to attend John Stewart’s “Rally to Restore Sanity” on the National Mall. The all-night train will serve as our hotel for the evening, as the train fare is cheaper than any hotel stay in D.C. Goals for the night: 1. Find seats with power outlets (the Droid X is a power hog) and 2. find the quiet car.

The Rally to Restore Sanity and its seemingly contradictory sister rally, “March to Keep Fear Alive” are Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert’s brainchildren in response to the much-hyped, ultra-conservative rally by Glenn Beck a couple of months back. Although tomorrow’s rally promises to be humorous and generally apolitical, the organizers are pushing for a centrist, “reasonable” tone that will hopefully appeal to the majority of Americans that are not in the loudly-shouting political groups that lately have been forefront in the national media. So, I’m fully expecting the rally to be entertaining and funny, but I’m not holding out hope that it will be the spark to ignite the centrists, liberals, and democrats that many fervently despite it to be. Okay, a bit of hope.

Update: success in both goals. We’re in a repurposed business-class car. Others on the train are slowly filtering back for the quiet.

I took a stroll through the rest of the train, and from what I could tell, everyone in this train is
headed for the rally.

I hope there are enough porta-potties.
