Footsore but happy in Camp

Across moors, rocks, and boggy earth…we’re really hoping that the trail gets easier from here. However, it was an incredible day with great weather and world-class hiking and views, so our complaining is tempered with enjoyment.

As we started our long traverse of Slieve Mish, we watched a sheep herder putting his collie through his paces cutting two sheep out of a flock. The herder came over to the fence and we had a nice chat about dogs, Lake Tahoe, and of course, the fabulous weather.

Once we finally slogged into the little village of Camp, we passed by a pub, where we started talking to a pleasant fellow, Vincent, who eagerly left his pint and smokes on the outdoor table to show us the local b&b’s. The first one he took us to had stopped taking in guests six years earlier, but she pointed the three of us to Fingal’s b&b, run by Mr. Daly in the pub next door. Fingal’s hadn’t opened yet, as it is still early in the season. So, Mr. Daly, Vincent, Miss Fish and I ralked about the U. S. “God bless America!” exclaimed Mr. Daly. “She gave countless Irish employment and a better life.” That, and he wondered hopefully if Nevada was full of cowboys, so we told him the truth: it *is* full of cowboys.

Mrs. Daly phoned a b&b down the road, the Sea View, and Joanne the proprietor was at the pub door in her SUV before Mrs. Daly even hung up the phone. She carted our packs off to the b&b while we took our leave of the Dalys, and went across the road to Ashe’s, the other pub that served supper.

Ashe’s was great! The food set a high standard for our eating experiences on the rest of the trip. Low, dark ceilings with a warm fireplace and a fine pint of Guiness along with exceptionally good food made this the perfect way to wrap up our day.

We’re ensconced at the Sea View now, in a fine room with…well, a sea view. After a hot shower and mutual footrubs, we’re calling it an early night.

Aren’t the Irish wonderful with their willingness to be of assistance. I’m glad you had such a perfect ending to an impressive hike!
